SCHOOL
PASTORS
The School Pastors programme, an initiative by the Ascension Trust, is dedicated to supporting young people within school and college communities across the UK. Volunteers, known as school or college pastors, offer a caring, listening, and helping presence to students, aiming to promote safety and reduce anti-social behaviour. By being available to listen and provide guidance, they help young people navigate challenges and encourage them to become responsible citizens. This initiative not only enriches the students' educational experience but also offers additional pastoral support to schools and contributes to a reassuring environment for the wider community .
Operating in over 40 schools and colleges across 31 locations, with more than 400 trained volunteers, the programme has a significant presence throughout the UK . School Pastors engage in various activities, including lunchtime patrols, one-on-one listening support, group sessions, and mentoring. They also participate in school assemblies, drop-in sessions, and special events, adapting their involvement to meet the specific needs of each school community. Their consistent and approachable presence helps build trust with students, providing them with an additional layer of support beyond the traditional educational framework .
Becoming a School Pastor involves a commitment to care for young people and contribute positively to their school environment. Volunteers are typically members of local churches who are good listeners, positive role models, and willing to dedicate time and love to support students. The programme also offers opportunities for individuals to become Prayer Pastors, providing spiritual support through prayer for the School Pastors and the students they serve .
